Inside Football column: Martyn Waghorn will provide a massive lift for Leicester City – and the Blue Army
Wednesday, September 1st, 2010“After a poor start to the season and signs of supporter disenchantment at the end of Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Reading, Leicester City needed a lift and the capture of fans’ favourite Martyn Waghorn will do exactly that. For the second successive season, he will be like a breath of fresh air wafting through the corridors at the Walkers Stadium.”

Leicester City had ‘to fight’ for Yuki Abe move to the Walkers Stadium
Wednesday, September 1st, 2010Leicester City had to fight to gain a work permit so that Japan international Yuki Abe could complete his move to the Walkers Stadium yesterday.
The 28-year-old midfielder’s move from Urawa Reds was only confirmed after a successful appeal in London against an original decision to deny him a work permit as he had not played the required 75 per cent of internationals in the last two years.
Abe has been left out of the Japan squad for this week’s internationals so he could complete a move that he described on the Reds website as his “childhood dream” to play abroad.
The fee is undisclosed but the Mercury understands it is nominal.
The search for a central defender took several twists before City ran out of time.
As reported by the Mercury yesterday, Ashley Williams was top of City boss Paulo Sousa’s shopping list, but an initial offer of around £2million was rejected by the Swans, who issued a firm statement saying the 26-year-old Welsh player of the year was not for sale.
City were considering a second, improved bid but, doubting whether it would be successful, turned their attention instead to Hull defender Kamil Zayatte.
The Tigers were willing to part with the 25-year-old Guinea international as they continue their cost-cutting programme following relegation from the Premier League, but City ran out of time to complete the deal.
They may now try to recruit Zayatte on loan when the loan window opens in a week’s time, or try again in January when the transfer window reopens.
Meanwhile, DJ Campbell’s £1.5m move to Blackpool eventually went through, despite a stumbling block over the terms of his contract.
However, Campbell eventually agreed terms just before the window shut and said he had unfinished business at Bloomfield Road.
“I’m over the moon, I’m delighted,” said Campbell. “It feels like I’ve got unfinished business, everyone knows how much I love Blackpool.
“I wanted to come back and I’m just delighted that it’s been made possible.”
City received no other offers for any of their players.
Former City midfielder Tom Cleverley has joined Wigan Athletic on loan from Manchester United.
Leicester City Academy boys clicking into gear
Wednesday, September 1st, 2010It looks as if it is coming together for Leicester City’s under-18s, academy manager Jon Rudkin said after their 2-0 win at Stoke City at the weekend.
Elliott Chamberlain, buoyed by his call-up to the Wales Under-21 squad, opened the scoring and Jeff Schlupp grabbed the second as City dominated against the Potters.
City also hit the woodwork three times and Shane Byrne missed a penalty as City looked dominant.
“It was a very pleasing performance,” said Rudkin. “The boys attacked very well, our tempo and defending were good and they put into practice all the things we had been working on in training.”
