Wednesday, September 1st, 2010Leicester City can drag themselves out of their early-season slump, according to goalkeeper Conrad Logan.
After Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat against Reading, City have now picked up just one point from their first four fixtures and are joint-bottom of the Championship.
However, Logan said it is early days and believes City have not been rewarded for their performances.
The Irishman said Lady Luck has not been smiling on Paulo Sousa’s men, but the players were still confident they can enjoy a good season.
“It is not the best start but we can see every week we are improving, and we could have very easily won that game by a couple of goals,” said Logan.
“If we keep believing and improving then we will be fine. You go through stages in a season when you have don’t have any luck. But it is a long season and it will even itself out, and we will keep improving.
“We got off to a pretty poor start by our own standards, but the lads are still upbeat and we are training well.
“We are taking on board the manager’s new style of play, but it is going to take time.
“It is frustrating we haven’t got off to a better start but we will be judged over the course of the 46 games, not just the first four.
“The Reading game was a prime example. We could have won by a couple of goals, and for whatever reason we didn’t score.
“We will keep working hard. Last year we went through a couple of poor spells and this time we have started off with a poor spell. It is a long season and things will change.”
Logan said the players were still getting to grips with Sousa’s style of play, but were improving every week.
“Sometimes when a new manager comes in, people may expect things straight away but it doesn’t happen in football,” he added. “It is a new style of play and every week we get more confident.
“We have good morale and we will stick in there and keep going. Our luck will change.
“Every week we are improving. It is going to be frustrating for the fans who want to come and see us win and play nice football. But as a group we can see improvement every week and we will get better.
“Hopefully, our luck will change and we will get what we deserve.”
Martyn Waghorn deal tops a busy day for Leicester City
Wednesday, September 1st, 2010Martyn Waghorn completed a stunning return to Leicester City after an eventful transfer deadline day.
The 20-year-old striker joined City from Sunderland just before the deadline closed for an initial £2million fee which could rise to £3m with clauses.
Japan international Yuki Abe also completed his move to the Walkers Stadium after City won an appeal to gain a work permit, while DJ Campbell finalised his protracted move to Premier League side Blackpool for a fee believed to be just under £1.5m.
But City missed out on two defensive targets, Swansea City’s Ashley Williams and Hull City’s Kamil Zayatte.
It will be the arrival of Waghorn which will capture the imagination of City fans, but it was a deal that was nearly scuppered.
City had left a £2m transfer on the table after it was originally rejected in the summer by Sunderland, but the Black Cats decided to take up the offer to fund the club record signing of Asamoah Gyan from Rennes for just over £13m.
Waghorn underwent a medical and agreed terms yesterday lunchtime, but his move was then put on hold as Sunderland would not sanction the transfer until the Gyan deal was completed. City had to wait until minutes before the deadline before they could get their man.
Waghorn said he was excited at being back at City.
“I have come to play football and help the club get where it belongs,” he said.
“I was out shopping on Monday when I got the call to say Leicester were interested and within a couple of hours I was on my way down. It has all been a bit of a blur.”
City chairman Milan Mandaric said the deal proved the intentions of the new owners, the Asian Football Investments consortium, led by Aiyawatt Raksriaksorn, known as Top.
“Top has recognised a talented, young English striker and has provided the financial backing to turn the dream of Waggy’s return into reality,” said Mandaric.
“I know the fans will be as pleased as I am at the return of Waggy.
“I know that Paulo (Sousa, City manager) has wanted to make this signing for quite some time.”
