Gary Silke column: Let the Fosse Boys be heard

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

“Anyone who complains about crowd noise at a football match needs to go home and find a new hobby. Following a furious reaction and hailstorm of emails in support of the Fosse Boys, Leicester City are holding a meeting with two of the group’s representatives tomorrow. In 36 years of supporting LCFC, I don’t think I have ever been so embarrassed by the actions of my club. They need to set this right tomorrow, apologise to all concerned, and undergo a seismic shift in their attitude towards their own supporters.”

Paul Gallagher aiming high at Leicester City now his injury problems are over

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Paul Gallagher is hoping his Leicester City injury problems are finally behind him.

The 25-year-old striker admitted that he is playing catch-up after problems following a thigh injury.

Gallagher missed the final two games of pre-season and then the Championship matches at Crystal Palace and Burnley.

But he was back with a bang in the Carling Cup win at Leeds, keeping his place for the Reading defeat last weekend.

Gallagher said: “It’s been frustrating for me because last season I played in most of the games and it was a successful season.”

He revealed that his inactivity was down to cramp.

“That’s been the problem. I missed a lot of the pre-season with the thigh problem so I’m catching up on match-time,” he said.

Gallagher admitted he had some apprehension about returning to the side at Elland Road. But he played an instrumental part in City turning around the tie to win 2-1 with a late Steve Howard spot-kick.

“I was struggling at the end and I was pleased to look up and see 89 minutes on the clock when we got the penalty,” said Gallagher.

“I usually take them but I was worried I might cramp up. I was so glad to see the ball in the back of the net. He (Howard) deserved his goal.”

Gallagher is waiting to see what manager Paulo Sousa does with his team formation when City return to action at Coventry a week on Saturday.

Reverting to a 4-4-2 with Howard and Gallagher up front transformed City’s fortunes at Leeds, but it did not work against the Royals and Gallagher was substituted after 55 minutes.

Former City loanee Tom Cleverley believes his switch to Wigan will help his chances of succeeding at Old Trafford.

The midfielder joined the Latics on a season-long deal on deadline day.

“This was the right next step for me,” he told the Manchester Evening News.

“Sir Alex Ferguson had said he wanted to keep me, but looking at the size of United’s squad and the quality of the midfielders, I worried I might not get many chances.”

Signings not over for Leicester City boss Paulo Sousa

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Leicester City manager Paulo Sousa is targeting more additions to his squad when the loan window opens next week.

Sousa has completed permanent deals for Martyn Waghorn and Yuki Abe, with DJ Campbell switching to Blackpool.

However, Sousa had other targets in his sights ahead of transfer deadline day and may try to resurrect his interest in them with more talks next week.

Top of Sousa’s list could be Hull defender Kamil Zayette after City’s attempts to line up a move for the Guinea international on Tuesday ran out of time.

City were also linked with Portsmouth striker John Utaka, with QPR also reportedly interested in signing the Nigeria international.

Utaka, a £7million signing from Rennes in 2007, has failed to make an impact at Fratton Park and cash-strapped Pompey are struggling to afford his reported £80,000 wages.

“It appears there was a bit of interest in the player but not enough to lead to anything,” said a source close to Pompey.

“They want some return for their outlay and, of course, they are very short of bodies and were only able to name four subs against Cardiff last weekend.

“A loan deal may be a short-term solution but I’m sure the wages could be a difficult hurdle to overcome.”

Meanwhile, Coventry manager Aidy Boothroyd says midfielder Sammy Clingan was not a Leicester target.

Clingan’s name has cropped up a couple of times this season as a potential signing for Sousa, but Boothroyd said the reports are wide of the mark and warned off City.

“He’s a player I like and want, and I certainly won’t be loaning him out to any of our rivals, particularly our local rivals,” said Boothroyd.

The two clubs clash at the Ricoh Arena a week on Saturday.
