Conrad Logan sets sights on regular Leicester City starting spot

By LCFC | September 6, 2010

Conrad Logan has warned Chris Weale he faces a fight to be Leicester City's first-choice goalkeeper.

Logan has deputised well for Weale, who is battling back to fitness after a shoulder injury picked up at Burnley, and he fought off the challenge of new loan arrival Carl Ikeme to keep his place in the starting line-up in the 2-1 defeat to Reading.

City manager Paulo Sousa's decision to keep Logan in goal ahead of Ikeme has given the 24-year-old Irishman confidence he can retain his place even when Weale returns.

Logan has been at City for five years now but has made only 20 appearances and has been used predominantly as back-up.

But he said he now wants regular first-team football and he does not want to go out on loan again after five previous loan spells.

"I definitely need first-team football now," he said.

"I am 24 and I have been out on loan before.

"But I am a Leicester player and I don't really want to go out on loan and play for other clubs.

"With Chris here, we are both pushing each other and I will do what I can to play.

"I was pleased to get the nod (over Ikeme) but I have been working hard to try to impress the manager.

"It was unfortunate for Chris to get injured but it showed good faith from him (Sousa), after bringing in a goalkeeper, to give me the nod and play me.

"I work hard all the time. It was unfortunate for Chris he is out injured and the manager has brought in a loan keeper, who is also a very good keeper, but it is good for my confidence that the manager stuck with me and I will try to repay him.

"I will just keep working hard and see what happens.

"I have been fairly pleased with my own performances lately but obviously it is no good if you lose.

"I would rather play and keep clean sheets, but I have just got to take my chances when I get them. Hopefully I will impress the manager."

After the departures of former manager Nigel Pearson and assistants Craig Shakespeare and Steve Walsh, Logan said it was vital that City retained the services of goalkeeping coach Mike Stowell.

"Mike is a very good goalkeeping coach," Logan said. "I have worked with him now for five or six years and I don't think there are many better out there. "It is a specialised position and, when things are going well there is no need to change it.

"Chris played well last season and we are all improving, so it was very important he stayed."
