The Alan Birchenall column: Here’s your chance to salute your Leicester City heroes

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

“Today’s clash with Preston North End is all about our present position and how much a win will help – but it is also going to acknowledge Leicester City’s past by recognising the achievements of its former players.

“More than 30 former City stars have been invited to the Walkers Stadium in what we hope will become an annual event.

“John Ogilvie, who played for us in the mid-1950s, will be the “elder statesman” at 82, along with Derek Hogg, who turns 70 this week, and will be travelling to the game from his home in Norwich.”

Sven-Goran Eriksson says his Leicester City side must stop leaking goals

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

Sven-Goran Eriksson says Leicester City must stop being defensive “soft touches.”

City go into today’s Championship clash with Preston (3.0) having conceding eight goals in Eriksson’s four matches in charge.

And the former England coach admitted: “It is too easy to score against us and we have to change that.

“We can move the ball well and attack and create, as we did against West Brom, but we have to be more aware of danger.

“We need to work on that part of our game and change it quickly.”

Both teams are in the basement zone of the Championship and Eriksson said it was vital that his players stayed in a confident frame of mind despite losing at Swansea last weekend before the Carling Cup loss to West Brom.

He said: “We’ve had two bad results and we need to win games. When you lose, the first thing that goes is confidence and we have to ensure that doesn’t happen.

“I hope we can play good football and pass the ball as Preston are in a situation like us where they want points, and it will be a big battle.”

Portuguese defender Miguel Vitor is expected to partner Jack Hobbs at the heart of the City defence, while both full-backs could also be loanees – Tottenham’s Kyle Naughton and Manchester City’s Greg Cunningham.

With skipper Matt Oakley ruled out with a thigh strain, Franck Moussa is expected to retain his place in midfield.

Eriksson may opt to start Martyn Waghorn as a lone striker to try to unsettle a leaky Preston back line which has conceded 29 goals – the worst record in all four divisions.

Former City striker Hume hopes for a birthday goal at the Walkers Stadium

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

At the start of the week, the thought of celebrating his 27th birthday at the Walkers Stadium was the furthest thing from Iain Hume’s mind.

The popular striker made 122 league appearances for Leicester City between 2005 and 2008, scoring 33 times, before moving to Barnsley.

Last month, he joined Preston on a 93-day loan agreement. But, after netting twice in seven outings, he learned last weekend that his parent club planned to recall him.

However, much to Hume’s delight, the two clubs thrashed out a swap deal which will see him stay at Preston for the remainder of his loan period, with Paul Hayes going in the opposite direction, also on loan.

Hume received a call on Wednesday from manager Darren Ferguson, and the good news was like an early birthday present.

“I have been so much in limbo it’s unbelievable,” Hume told the Lancashire Evening Post.

“I always knew something was going to happen because the manager and chairman here have stated how much they wanted me to stay and I am happy with how things have gone.

“I brought all my stuff home on Tuesday because I had all my medical records and everything so I had to cover all bases. I had known there were things in the pipeline but nothing was guaranteed. Anyway, I have brought all my medical records back, put my boots back in the boot room and I am going to plant roots here again.

“I have got until December 15 and, hopefully, a lot longer, so I am happy with how things have worked out.”

Ferguson was delighted to keep Hume, especially as Preston have a shortage of strikers with Jon Parkin suspended and Chris Brown and Josh King injured for today’s clash.

Ferguson said: “The chairman has worked all week to get it resolved. It was looking like Iain would be going back but the chairman’s worked hard and managed to put in place a deal which sees him stay for another 50-odd days.

“Iain has been a breath of fresh air, his performances have been good. The fans have taken to him.

“He’s actually a lot better than I thought – his movement is magnificent.”

Hume is looking forward to his Leicester return and believes Preston, who lie just one place above his former club in the Championship table, can make progress,

“We got the win over Crystal Palace last weekend which was the home win we were looking for,” he said. “We’ve got to build on it. Our away form hasn’t been bad recently and, hopefully, we can go to Leicester and stop their revolution.

“It’s going to be tough there, but every game is tough in the Championship. We’ll have to be at our best.”

Injury-hit Leicester City defender Aleksandar Tunchev on the comeback trail

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

Leicester City defender Aleksandar Tunchev is taking the first tentative steps towards recovery.

The 29-year-old Bulgarian international took part in his first full training session at Belvoir Drive on Thursday.

And while coaches and fitness staff at the club are preaching caution, it is certainly a breakthrough for the centre-back, who has been burdened by injury problems for nearly two years.

Manager Sven-Goran Eriksson said: “It was good to see him on the training pitch. He’s not ready yet, of course. He hasn’t gone into any tackles.

“I don’t know when he will play, but he is a very good footballer who looks confident on the ball and I know him from the Bulgarian national team.”

Tunchev suffered a cruciate ligament injury in an FA Cup tie at Crystal Palace in January, 2009 and was out for seven months.

However, after making three comeback appearances, he again damaged his knee, ironically in last season’s corresponding fixture with today’s opponents, Preston, and had to undergo further surgery last September.

He went under the knife again in March and was in the final stages of his rehabilitation when he damaged his other knee, requiring more treatment.

But there now appears to be some light at the end of a very dark tunnel which has seen him make just 29 appearances since his arrival from CSKA Sofia in July 2008.

And Eriksson has paid tribute to his mental strength.

He said. “It is very tough to be away for such a long time but every day I have seen him in the fitness rooms early on and then leaving late so he deserves to be back. I have to congratulate him on his efforts.”

Tunchev was partnered during a period of his injury-free career by Jack Hobbs, who is also delighted that his fellow defender is starting to make progress.

He said: “It was great to see Tunch has trained and the lads are pleased to see him back.

“It’s been a long while for him but he has composure on the ball and a lot of knowledge.

“He helps others and it is unfortunate that he has had injuries. The sooner he is back the better.”
