Manchester City fans’ scarves pay tribute to goal hero

Saturday, January 8th, 2011

When Neil Young scored the winning goal for Manchester City against Leicester in the 1969 FA Cup Final, he was wearing a red-and-black striped shirt.

Manchester City changed their strip from their normal light blue to avoid a colour clash with Leicester City’s royal blue shirts.

Young’s goal was an unstoppable left-foot shot from Mike Summerbee’s cross from the right.

City goalkeeper Peter Shilton was left with no chance of saving it.

This was just one of the 86 goals Neil scored for Manchester City in a total of 334 games in all competitions. Sadly, Young has been diagnosed with cancer.

As a tribute to him, all Manchester City fans who bought a ticket for tomorrow’s game received a voucher from their club.

Voucher holders who made a donation to support the family of Neil Young and the Cecilia Centre, Wythenshawe Hospital were given a red-and-black scarf. The appearance of these red-and-black scarves in the away section at the game is a fitting tribute to a great Manchester City player from the 1960s and early 1970s.
